Bee Sticks
Do you know what a bee stick is? No, they are not candies. They are sticks with bees glued on them, that you use to pollinate flowers. My class made them to pollinate our flowers. The flowers we pollinated are called brassica plants, or the Wisconsin fast plants. Brassica plants belong to the crucifer family. They got their name because all of the crucifer plants have four petals arranged in a shape of a cross. Do you think that you have ever ate a crucifer plant? Well, if you have eaten Cabbage, Turnip, Collard, Watercress, Kohlrabi, Choy sum, Cauliflower, well you get my point. So if you have ever ate one of those you have eaten a crucifer plant. The 4 parts of crucifer plants are the petals and they are the thin colored parts of the plant, there is the anthers and that is the part of the flower with the pollen on it, and last but not least, there is the stigma and that is middle of the plant that has all the seeds in it. Well, I have to go pollinate my flowers... Bye.

Honey Bees
Did you know that all the worker bees are female? Hi, I'm Zoe, and I want to tell you all about bees. First, I will tell you about the life cycle. First, the Queen must lay an egg. After all, eggs cannot lay themself! Next, the larvae (LAR-vay) hatch, and are fed beebread and royal jelly (though the Queen is fed only royal jelly). Beebread is made out of pollen and nectar. Royal jelly is white, milky stuff. Finally, the adult bee emerges from the cell. Did you know that the workers fan the honey to make it? The drone is the only boy in the hive. If they do not fall in love with the queen, they get their wings clipped off and they get thrown out of the hive. Uh-oh! :-( Well, I'm VERY buzzzzz-y, so that's all I have to say!

Plant Growth and Development
We have started a new science unit called Plant Growth and Development.
We have our own plants and we record how our plants are doing.
We have one or two plants in each quad. There are wicks on the bottem to suck up water on this wet pad that all of are plants are on. Some have buds and flowers, and some have only buds, like mine. Some are not doing so well.
We will start learning about bees tomorrow.....stay tuned.

Duvall Citizen of the Year
Do you know what last night was? It was a very special night for me. The citizen of the year, for Duvall, was elected. Paige Denison was a nominee, for all she does in the community to help others. She works at the senior center, the church, the civic club, the library and even our classroom. There were 11 other contestants.
It was a special night. I was at the dinner, there was catering that had the best salmon ever. There was squash, and potatoes and a big salad with honey mustard dressing and raisins. It was fun and I had some chamomile tea. During dinner they anounced the citizen of the year. My mom is Paige Denison and she won the citizen of the year award. I felt proudthat she won!
