Our New Science Unit...SOILS
We started a new science unit. It's about SOILS. We have these bags with some grass, a little bit of soil, a piece of fruit or vegetables, and a worm. We have a book about rot. It's called What Rot! Nature's Mighty Recycler. Do you know how rot helps soil? It takes the things it rots and makes it soil. Did you know that worms help soil? Well they do. Their castings help the soil. Without soil there wouldn't be plants, trees, or even some animals. Did you know all that? Well, yes or no, now you do. I feel very good about knowing this stuff. Do you?

Lewis and Clark and me: A Dog's Tale (cont.)
Chapter 4:A Buffalo Calf
This is about a silly buffalo calf who is scared of Seaman and huddles with Lewis for protection. What a silly calf! in the end, Seaman befriends the calf, but Lewis has to leave the calf behind when they go on their ship. that made me feel sad!
Chapter 5: Beavers
This is a story about a beaverwho almost killed seaman. "boom!" The sound of Drouillard's rifle rang in Seaman's ears. Then he dove into the water to try to catch a very large beaver. The bad news is: the beaver bit Seaman's leg and cut an artery! Ouch!
Chapter 6: Buffalo
This is a story about a buffalo who almost killed Lewis! But it was Seaman to the rescue. If the sentinel couldn't do it, Seaman could!!!! He scared the buffalo away. Yay, Seaman!
If you want to hear more read this book, or check back here for the final chapters.

Observing: my shoes
"I like these shoes Mom" I said. "But Mom" my little sister yelled "I want to get the kind I liked". "Your sister is the one going to school" my Mom said. "I know but I am going to school to"! "We'll get the kind your sister wanted". " No fair"! When we left the shop my sister was crying but I knew she would eventuly like them. That was the conversation we had in the shoes store. Now let me tell you about my shoes. My shoes are
1, Pearl white (well they used to be.)
2, Very dirty (that's why their not pearl white.)
3, Skechers
4, They have been used a lot
5, They have white shoelaces
6. My shoes are size four
7. They have a blue stripe down the front
8. They have a blue lining
9. They have a white toe
They were very pretty when we bought them but now their partly brown, partly white, but they are still my favorite, and I like to wear them every day. I bet that when my sister said that she wanted the other kind, she didn't know that she would like these some day!

Louis and Clark and Me...A Dog's Tale
Have you ever read this book, Louis and Clark and Me...A Dog's Tale. We started it in class.
Today we read chapter one, two and three of the book by Laurie Myers.
In chapter one it starts with the dog explaining the setting, sitting on a dock with his owner. It talks about his old owner selling Seaman (that's the dogs name) for $20 to Lewis Meriweather. Then, they start the expedition.
In chapter two it talks about their journey down the river, and after about an hour of sailing they run into a whole bunch of swimming squirrels. Seaman catches a whole pile of them and then the crew has them for dinner.
In chapter 3 it talks about when they encounter their first indians. One of them calls Seaman "bear", and then Lewis and Clark show the indian some tricks that Seaman does.
They tell the indian that Seaman is a dog and then the indian says "Bear-Dog." He wanted to trade 3 beaver skins for Seaman, but Lewis said "no trade".
I like this book because the main character is a dog. It's interesting because it tells about history too. I suggest you read it! What do you think will happen next?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Yesterday we didn't have school! Cool, right? I thought so, but do you know why we didn't have school? I do, so I'll tell you.
First, there was a guy named Martin Luther King. He was born on January 15, 1929. Martin Luther King is famous because he made speeches to the community. He made speeches about the races of people, and that people should be treated equally. His most important speach, he siad "I have a dream that someday my children will be judged by content of their character, not by the color of their skin". Because, back then, black and white weren't allowed in the same school, or even the same bathroom for crying out loud!
Martin Luther King was starting to make a difference in the country. When one day, he was standing on the balcony of a hotel, when someone shot him. He died at the age of 39, on January 17, 1968. Ater he had died, people made a holiday for him. He made a big impact in our country, and now, black and white can live together in peace.
I respect what Martin Luther King did for our country. I hope you do too.

Saturn's moon: Titan
Earlier this school year, during our study of the planets, we became aware of the NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) mission to land a probe on Saturn's moon Titan. The Huygens probe, ( Huygens discovered Saturn's moon Titan), was launched aboard the Cassini spacecraft in 1997. The probe landed successfully and photos are available....check them out.

New Year's Resolutions (Goals)
Today we're writing about our New Year's goals. I have lots of goals but today I'm only going to share some with you. My first goal is working on writing in school. I like journaling, and I want to write more in my journal. My next goal is to keep my room more tidy because when friends come over for just twenty minutes....boom crash Boom! as soon they leave my room is a mess. And my very last goal is going outside more often and walking to the lake. I have a lot more goals. But maybe next time I can share all of them with you. What are your goals ?
